Youtube, the biggest free video hosting site in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people flock daily to the site to watch a kid sing numa numa or a demented transvestite cry about britney spears.

Just because youtube is popular does not mean that your video will become popular. There are hundreds of video hosting sites that provide much better video quality but unlike youtube you won’t get as many viewers.

Youtube is hell when you want to upload a tutorial. Nobody wants to see a tutorial in which your face looks like a blur and the things you type look like scribbles. When you upload a video to youtube you are sacrificing your quality and what you get in return is the grainy video of hell. So please webmasters, don’t upload things to youtube just use an alternative.

Don’t get me wrong, Youtube is great if you want to upload the video of your cat playing the piano, or your dog humping your new teddy bear. But online tutorials deserve much better quality than that, especially when you are trying to show the specs of a brand new program that just came out or you are trying to show how to set up a proper affiliate marketing campaign.

The reason most webmasters decide not to upload videos to other websites is because they think they won’t get as many views, well you are wrong. I’m more than sure that if your blog is about affiliate marketing you won’t see your usual 13 year old kid searching youtube for “affiliate marketing tutorial” but rather “funny video of elephant taking a dump” meaning that the only probable views that your video will get will come directly from your blog rather than youtube search results so it won’t matter whether you upload the video to youtube or your local server, you’ll still get the same views.

So anyway, here are all the youtube alternatives all of which I’ve checked the quality of and I give a rating for all of them. Feel free to express your own ratings and comments for each of these in the comments section.

1.DivX
Rating: 10 out of 10
Divx Has got to be one of the best, if not the best online video format out there. Divx is free to download and you can convert your videos to a divx format fast and easy. The only problem with Divx is the fact that your viewers need to have the Divx plugin installed in order to view the videos. But uploading Divx videos is absolutely worth it. The picture quality is amazingly stunning, and even if you have dial up your picture will still be perfect, unlike youtube which kills your quality especially in a slow connection.

2.MegaVideo
Rating: 9.5 out of 10
This site is very much like Youtube except that the quality is better and even the loading speeds are better. It only takes seconds to join and the upload is speed is amazing. Megavideo is one of the top video hosting sites on the planet and I am more than sure that it’s a very strong competitor against Youtube, and if it’s not then it will be soon.
Unlike Divx, your viewers do not need to download anything in order to view the videos, if they leave in the middle of the video they can simply click the middle of the status bar and it will take them to the part where they left off, if you use Youtube constantly you’ll notice that this is not one of their features, you have to let the video load and then you can watch the part where you left off.

Megavideo is also great because you can record a video for as long as you want because there is no limit as to how long a video can be, on the other hand Youtube only allows the annoying 10 minute max video.

3.Veoh
Rating: 8.5 out of 10
Veoh is another great video uploading site. It is free and the quality is great. It has a vibrant community but not as big as Youtube’s. This site is just like youtube on speed, but not quality. The quality of the videos here are much better.
A great feature of Veoh is that they have a free program that you can download that allows you to browse and watch videos from your Veoh application rather than Firefox, or Internet Explorer, or whatever browser you use. I do not use this feature much unless I have too many windows open and I’m afraid firefox will crash.

4.Myspace Videos
Rating: 8 out of 10
Myspace is another great place to upload videos, one of the reasons it’s because there is a mass number of possible viewers, and if your video is featured you can be sure to have thousands of viewers in just hours.
Myspace is almost like Youtube because there are a ton of viewers which means that there is a big possibility of your video becoming viral, but Myspace unlike Youtube has a better quality and faster upload time. I have actually seen an increase in stupid pointless videos in Myspace, meaning that soon Myspace videos will be as big as youtube, because we all know stupid videos is the brick and mortar that built Youtube.

5.Metacafe
Rating: 8 out of 10
This site is great for tutorials, you’ll hardly find any idiotic videos here. The majority of videos that I have seen in this place are very useful tutorials, and some of the featured videos are tutorials as well. If you think you’ve got a potential viral tutorial upload it here as you’ll get a lot of views. Metacafe also allows you to earn money through your videos, and I’ve seen people that have made of $3k with just a simple little video of how to do a cool thing, like smoke grenades or playing with liquid nitrogen.
Definitely use this if you want to have good quality and a respectable viewership.
